Does SafeAssign detect AI writing? What Blackboard actually checks — and what it doesn't

No. SafeAssign compares your paper with published sources, the web and other student papers and reports matching text. It does not score whether writing is AI-generated. Schools that want AI detection in Blackboard add a separate tool through an integration — so check your course's policy to see which one, if any, is used.

So how is AI writing detected?
Matching-text checkers and AI detectors are different tools. AI detectors estimate how predictable your wording is — and that’s where non-native writers are at a disadvantage. See which AI detectors colleges actually use.
What non-native writers should know
- A high SafeAssign score means matching text — usually quotes, common phrases or missing citations — not suspected AI use.
- Non-native writers sometimes reuse set phrases from textbooks or templates; that can match other papers even when the ideas are original.
- If your school also runs an AI detector, that separate score is the one that is known to flag non-native writing more often.
If SafeAssign flagged your work
- Open the originality report and look at which passages matched and which sources they matched.
- Quoted text with a citation is not plagiarism — point that out if it's counted against you.
- Rewrite matching phrases in your own words and add missing references.

Does the SafeAssign originality report detect AI?
No. The originality report shows text that matches other documents. AI-written text usually doesn't match an existing source, so SafeAssign isn't designed to identify it.
Does Blackboard have AI detection?
Not through SafeAssign. Institutions that want AI detection add a third-party tool to Blackboard — for example Turnitin, Copyleaks or GPTZero through an LTI integration.
What SafeAssign percentage is acceptable?
There's no universal cut-off. Instructors look at what matched: a high score from properly cited quotes and a reference list is very different from copied paragraphs.
