Free TOEFL writing checker · new 2026 tasks

Score your TOEFL writing before test day.

Paste a Write an Email or Write for an Academic Discussion response, ideally with the task it answers. You get an estimated 0–5 task score — the scale TOEFL raters use — with a score for each part of the official scoring guide, the three changes that would raise it most, quoted from your own response, and the sentences that sound translated. It gives feedback; it never writes the answer for you.

What TOEFL raters look for

ETS scores each writing task as a whole, from 0 to 5, using a published scoring guide for each task type. The checker scores the three things those guides describe and gives a whole-number task score, so you can see which part is holding a response back.

CriterionPointsWhat earns full pointsWhat loses points
Task & elaboration0–5Email: covers every point the prompt asks for, with explanations or details that serve the email's purpose. Academic discussion: a relevant contribution to the professor's question, with well-elaborated reasons, examples or details rather than repeating a classmate. An email that skips one of the three points, or a discussion post that only agrees with a classmate (“I agree with Kelly because she is right”).
Language facility0–5A variety of sentence structures and precise, idiomatic word choice. In an email, a register and level of politeness that suit the reader, with requests and other actions phrased appropriately. The same simple sentence pattern throughout, or an email to a professor that opens with “Hey” and ends with “Answer me soon”.
Accuracy0–5Almost no lexical or grammatical errors beyond the slips expected of a competent writer under time pressure; errors never make the meaning hard to follow.Missing articles and wrong verb forms in nearly every sentence, so the reader has to guess what you mean.

Score bands: 5 — fully successful (5+) · 4 — generally successful (4+) · 3 — partially successful (3+) · 2 — mostly unsuccessful (2+) · 0–1 — unsuccessful (0+)

Why not ask ChatGPT for my TOEFL score?

You can, but a general chatbot often still uses the old 0–30 scale and the essay tasks that were removed in 2026. This checker is built for the current tasks.

FAQ

Questions students ask

Is this TOEFL writing checker free?

Yes. Your first check each day needs no account, signing in with Google gives you three a day, and checking the example response is always free. Subscribers get unlimited checks and rewrites.

Which TOEFL writing tasks does it check?

The two written tasks in the TOEFL iBT since January 2026: Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion. Build a Sentence is a word-order exercise with right or wrong answers, so it doesn't need a checker.

How does the 0–5 task score relate to my 1–6 Writing band?

TOEFL raters score each task from 0 to 5; ETS then combines the task scores into the Writing section band on the 1–6 scale. This checker estimates the task score for one response. It doesn't convert it to a band, because ETS doesn't publish an exact formula.

How long should my response be?

ETS sets a time limit rather than a word count. Most strong emails are about 100–120 words and most strong discussion posts are at least 100 words: enough to elaborate on every point without running out of time.

How accurate is an AI TOEFL score?

Treat it as an estimate for practice, not an official result. It follows the published scoring guides, but it can be a point away from a real rater, especially between 3 and 4. The most useful part is the quoted changes: fix them, check the new draft and see whether the score moves.

Is my response stored or used for training?

No. Your response is sent to our AI provider only to produce the feedback. We don’t use it to train any model and don’t keep it beyond what’s needed to show you the result.
