Rubric
The four criteria IELTS examiners use
Every IELTS Writing answer is marked on the same four criteria, each from 0 to 9; the overall band is their average, rounded to the nearest half band. The checker scores each one and explains what would earn the next band.
| Criterion | Points | What earns full points | What loses points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task Response | 0–9 | Answers every part of the question with a clear position that stays the same throughout; main ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples; meets the word count (250 for Task 2, 150 for Task 1). | Writes about the topic in general but never answers the exact question, or changes position halfway. |
| Coherence & Cohesion | 0–9 | Ideas progress logically; each paragraph has one clear central topic; linking words and reference (this, these, such) are used accurately and not mechanically. | Starts every paragraph with “Firstly / Moreover / In addition” whether or not the ideas connect. |
| Lexical Resource | 0–9 | A range of vocabulary used precisely and naturally, including less common words and collocations; few errors in word choice, word form and spelling. | Memorised phrases and rare words used in the wrong place (“plays a pivotal role in the comfort of life”). |
| Grammatical Range & Accuracy | 0–9 | A mix of simple and complex sentence structures; most sentences are error-free; punctuation is controlled and errors don't make the meaning unclear. | Only simple sentences, or long sentences with missing articles and wrong verb forms. |
Score bands: Band 8+ — very good user (8+) · Band 7 — good user (7+) · Band 6 — competent user (6+) · Band 5 — modest user (5+) · Below band 5 (0+)
Why not ask ChatGPT for my IELTS band?
You can, but a general chatbot tends to be generous and gives a different band each time. This checker is built for one job.
| This grader | General chatbot | |
|---|---|---|
| Same four criteria every time | Yes — each scored 0–9, overall averaged like the real test | Criteria depend on how you ask |
| Calibrated, not flattering | Told to mark like a strict examiner; 8+ is rare | Often over-scores practice essays |
| Quotes your answer | Each change points to an exact sentence | Often general advice |
| Rewrites your essay | Never — you practise the skill you'll need in the exam | Frequently offers a model answer |
FAQ
Questions students ask
Is this IELTS writing checker free?
Yes. Your first check each day needs no account, signing in with Google gives you three a day, and checking the example essay is always free. Subscribers get unlimited checks and rewrites.
How accurate is an AI IELTS band score?
Treat it as an estimate for practice, not an official result. Only certified IELTS examiners mark the real test, and AI estimates can be half a band or more away, especially near band boundaries. The most useful part is the quoted changes: fix them, check the new draft and see whether each criterion moves.
How is the overall Writing band calculated?
In the real test, Task 1 and Task 2 are each marked on four criteria, and Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1. This checker marks one answer at a time: its overall band is the average of the four criteria for that answer, rounded to the nearest half band.
Can it check Academic Task 1 (graphs and charts)?
Not yet. Academic Task 1 depends on the chart or diagram, which the checker can't see. It checks Task 2 essays and General Training Task 1 letters.
What if my essay is under 250 words?
The checker lowers Task Response, as an examiner would: an answer that is too short usually can't develop its ideas fully. The word counter under the box shows how close you are.
Is my essay stored or used for training?
No. Your essay is sent to our AI provider only to produce the feedback. We don’t use it to train any model and don’t keep it beyond what’s needed to show you the result.
