Every AP English Language free-response essay is scored 0–6 on the same three rows. The grader scores each row and explains what would earn the next point.

Questions students ask
How is an AP Lang essay scored?
Each of the three free-response essays is scored 0–6: Row A thesis (0–1), Row B evidence and commentary (0–4) and Row C sophistication (0–1). The free-response section is 55% of the exam score.
Is this AP Lang essay grader free?

Can it grade rhetorical analysis and synthesis essays?
Yes. Choose the essay type and paste the prompt. For rhetorical analysis and synthesis, add a short description of the passage or sources in the prompt box so the grader can judge how you used them.
How accurate is an AI AP Lang grader?
Use it as practice feedback, not a guaranteed score. AP readers are trained and calibrated together; an AI grader follows the published rubric closely but can misjudge borderline Row B and Row C decisions. The quoted revisions are the most useful part.
How do I earn the sophistication point?
Go beyond a formula: explain tensions or limits in your argument, place it in a broader context, or maintain a consistently vivid and persuasive style. A single “deep” sentence at the end rarely earns it.
