Does Canvas have AI detection? What Canvas checks, what your instructor sees, and how to tell

By ESL Humanizer editorial teamUpdated 5 min read

Short answer

No. Canvas has no AI detector of its own; it stores and routes submissions. An AI score appears only when your school licenses a separate detector, most often Turnitin and sometimes Copyleaks, and connects it to Canvas. Check the assignment page, your submission receipt and the syllabus, or ask your instructor. A connected detector gives an estimate, not proof, and Turnitin shows scores below 20% with an asterisk because they are less reliable.

Canvas is where you submit your work, so it is natural to assume it is also checking it. It isn't. Canvas has no AI detector of its own. An AI score shows up next to a Canvas assignment only when your school has licensed a separate detector and connected it to Canvas. Here is how to tell whether that is the case for your course, what your instructor actually sees, and what to do if your own writing is flagged.

The short answer

  • Canvas itself: no AI detection. It stores and routes submissions; it does not analyse your writing.
  • Connected tools: schools most often connect Turnitin, sometimes Copyleaks. Copyleaks lists its AI detector as available inside Canvas (Copyleaks, 2025).
  • Your course: whether a detector runs is decided by your institution and often by your instructor, assignment by assignment.

How to tell if your Canvas course checks for AI

  1. Read the assignment page. Assignments that go through Turnitin or Copyleaks usually say so, or open the tool's own submission screen inside Canvas.
  2. Check your submission confirmation. A Turnitin digital receipt or a Turnitin or Copyleaks report link means your file was checked by that tool.
  3. Read the syllabus and your school's academic integrity or AI policy. Many say which tools are used.
  4. Ask your instructor. It is a normal question, and the only reliable answer when the assignment page says nothing.

A similarity percentage is not an AI score. Plagiarism checks find text that matches other sources; an AI score is a separate estimate with no matching source behind it.

What your instructor sees

If your school licenses Turnitin's AI writing indicator, your instructor sees an estimate of how much of the document looks AI-generated. Turnitin reports a false positive rate of about 1% at the document level for documents scored above 20% AI, and about 4% at the sentence level; scores below 20% are shown with an asterisk because they are less reliable (Turnitin, 2023). Copyleaks highlights the phrases it considers typical of AI. Neither tool tells your instructor that you used AI; both give an estimate that your instructor has to interpret.

Some schools have switched AI scores off altogether. Vanderbilt University disabled Turnitin's AI detector, noting that even a 1% false positive rate could mean around 750 of the 75,000 papers it submitted in a year being wrongly flagged (Vanderbilt University, 2023).

Can Canvas detect ChatGPT?

Not by itself. Canvas cannot tell which tool produced a piece of text. Only a connected detector produces an AI estimate, and detectors are probabilistic: they react to predictable, evenly built sentences, not to a record of which website you used.

If English is your second language

Careful second-language writing often uses safe, common phrasing, and that is the kind of text detectors find predictable. In a Stanford study, seven detectors misclassified an average of 61% of human-written TOEFL essays as AI-generated (Liang et al., 2023). Detectors have changed since then: in our own 2026 GPTZero test, no learner text was flagged, but texts fully rewritten by AI were labelled mixed. Fixing your own grammar is not the risk; letting a chatbot rewrite every sentence is.

Quick answers

Does Canvas have AI detection?

No. Canvas has no built-in AI detector. An AI score appears only if your school connected a detector such as Turnitin or Copyleaks and licenses its AI feature.

Can Canvas detect ChatGPT?

Not by itself. Canvas can't tell which tool produced a text. Only a connected detector gives an AI estimate, and that estimate is probabilistic, not proof.

How do I know if my Canvas assignment uses Turnitin?

The assignment page usually says so or opens Turnitin's submission screen, and you may get a Turnitin digital receipt. If nothing says so, ask your instructor.

Can my instructor see an AI score in Canvas?

Only if your school licenses an AI detector and it is switched on for that assignment. The score sits in the detector's report, not in Canvas itself.
