Turnitin Clarity: what it is, what your instructor sees, and whether it detects AI
By ESL Humanizer editorial teamUpdated 6 min read
Short answer
Turnitin Clarity is a paid add-on for schools that use Turnitin Feedback Studio, generally available since July 15, 2025. Students draft assignments in a composition space with a guided AI assistant; instructors see a revision timeline, which text was pasted versus typed, a summary of the student’s AI chat history, and similarity results. Clarity itself is about the writing process — AI writing detection appears only if the institution also licenses Turnitin Originality. Write inside Clarity from the start, because text pasted from elsewhere shows as pasted.
If your instructor has set an assignment in Turnitin Clarity, you'll be writing inside Turnitin rather than in your usual editor — and your instructor will be able to see how the text was built, not just the final version. Here's what Clarity is, what each side sees, whether it detects AI, and how to use it without getting tripped up.
What Turnitin Clarity is
Turnitin Clarity is a writing environment from Turnitin that became generally available on July 15, 2025, as a paid add-on for institutions that use Turnitin Feedback Studio (Turnitin, 2025). It combines a space where students compose their assignment with a guided AI assistant, and gives instructors a view of the writing process behind each submission.
What you see as a student
- A composition space where you draft the assignment instead of writing elsewhere and uploading a file.
- A guided AI assistant that Turnitin describes as giving writing support at every stage, with an emphasis on structure, originality and responsible use of generative AI.
Whether and how you may use the assistant is up to your course. Read the assignment instructions before you open it.
What your instructor sees
According to Turnitin (Turnitin, 2025), instructors get:
- a timeline of your revisions;
- indicators that distinguish text you pasted from text you typed;
- a summary of your chat history with the AI assistant;
- similarity checking and submission metrics in the same view.
Does Turnitin Clarity detect AI?
Clarity is mainly about the writing process, not about scoring text. Turnitin says AI writing detection is available in the same view only when an institution also licenses Turnitin Originality (Turnitin, 2025). So your instructor may see an AI score as well — but only if your school has bought that separately. If they do, the usual caveats apply: Turnitin itself reports a false positive rate and marks low scores as less reliable (Turnitin, 2023). Our guide on whether Turnitin's AI detector is accurate covers what those numbers mean.
How to get Turnitin Clarity
You can't sign up for it yourself. Your institution has to add Clarity to its Turnitin Feedback Studio licence, and your instructor has to set an assignment that uses it. If you don't see it in your course, your school either hasn't bought it or your instructor isn't using it for that assignment.
Tips for non-native writers
- Write in Clarity from the start, including your outline and rough notes, so the timeline reflects your real process.
- Ask before using outside tools. If your course allows translation or proofreading tools, ask how to disclose them; if it doesn't, don't use them for that assignment.
- Don't panic about simple English. Detectors misread careful second-language writing far more often than native writing (Liang et al., 2023) — and a visible writing process is exactly what protects you from that.
Clarity vs other process tools
Clarity works only inside Turnitin and only if your school pays for it. Grammarly Authorship records your process in Google Docs and Word and has a free plan (Grammarly Support), and Draftback replays the history Google Docs already keeps (Draftback). For a full comparison, see our Grammarly Authorship guide and alternatives.
Practising your English outside class?
Paste a paragraph you wrote. ESL Humanizer highlights every change it makes to your phrasing and scores whether your meaning stayed the same — a good way to learn the patterns, then write them yourself.
